What is an Anaesthesia Depth Monitor (BIS Monitor)?

Patient safety during surgery is directly dependent on the effectiveness and correct administration of anaesthesia. The Anaesthesia Depth Monitor, also known as the BIS Monitor (Bispectral Index Monitor), is a vital device used to objectively assess the patient's level of consciousness during surgical procedures. By analysing brain waves, this monitor measures how deeply the patient responds to anaesthesia, thereby reducing the risk of excessive anaesthesia and helping to prevent situations of inadequate anaesthesia.

How Does the BIS Monitor Work?

The BIS monitor detects EEG (electroencephalogram) signals via electrodes placed on the patient's head. These signals are evaluated as a score between 0 and 100 using an algorithm.

A score of 100 represents a conscious and awake state,

while values between 40 and 60 generally represent the appropriate range for surgical anaesthesia.

These values allow the anaesthetist to see in real time whether the patient is sufficiently sedated and adjust the dosage accordingly.

What Are the Advantages of the BIS Monitor?

1.Patient Safety: Helps prevent postoperative complications by reducing the risk of excessive sedation.

2.Drug Savings: Prevents unnecessary use of anaesthetic agents.

3.Faster Recovery Time: With the correct dose of anaesthesia, the patient wakes up more quickly and comfortably.

4.Reduced Risk of Awareness: Minimises the chance of the patient remaining conscious during surgery.

When is it used?

The BIS monitor is preferred especially in high-risk patients (the elderly, those with serious systemic diseases) or in long, major surgeries. In critical interventions such as cardiac surgery, brain surgery and organ transplantation, BIS monitoring provides more precise anaesthesia management.

Result: Intelligent Monitoring System in Modern Anaesthesia

The Anaesthesia Depth Monitor is a product of modern medicine's patient safety-focused approach. By reducing the risk of awareness during surgical procedures, it enhances patient comfort while providing valuable data to healthcare professionals.
Healthcare institutions that utilise advanced technologies such as the BIS monitor enhance the quality of patient care while also fulfilling their ethical and economic responsibilities.
